THE ORDER OF DIVINE HARMONY
Vulcan theosophical/scientific fraternity
One of the few remaining genuine Vulcan mystic sects off the homeworld, the Order seek divinity through mathematical precision in feats of engineering and design, while studying the same in the natural world. They are a highly scientifically literate group, and they have several esteemed, published researchers among their number.
Founded on Vulcan in the Earth’s 3rd century, the Order of Divine Harmony seeks perfection in prediction, founded by a council of (supposed) geniuses, who sought to prove that divine harmony could be mathematically expressed and physically reproduced. This is chiefly done by their ‘faultfinders’ who seek to test and break proofs and prevailing theorems. They have previously performed breakthrough experiments considered outlandish on Tholomide radiation, the genesis effect, and slipstream subspace mechanics.
Though they do not explicitly forbid women, the Order has been comprised only of male Vulcans for almost its entire existence. Like most monastic unisex orders in the 25th century, they have little uptake among the youth, so the attrition of old age is the leading threat to their order and its works. By their own unabashed estimates, they have at least 70 years barring accidents until they become critically endangered.
The Order had its expeditionary and archaeological licenses revoked by the Federation Council in 2396 after one of it’s expeditions reportedly destroyed a local fossil record that would have prevented the installation of a geothermal research facility. Special permission has been made after the Vulcan Administration gave personal guarantees for their behaviour to allow them to settle on Dreizhen III, a risk they accept despite the lack of exploration and in-depth study on the planet.
Although they claim to have reformed their ways, they are still understood to be Machiavellian and generally inconsiderate to the point of negligence of those outside their faith. Despite that, they produce a great deal of research with higher quality scores than Daystrom and ZM, so they’re not total Pariahs, but they have very few fans outside their own number, which is less than 100 since the turn of the century.
Considered under the umbrella of ‘logic extremists’, in places that still measure such statistics against the wishes of the Vulcan Administration. Grandmaster M’Hum has been leader since the last conclave in 2301, and is still considered the most potent political force within their order. His Lieutenants, Brother Slok the brethren keeper, and Brother Maat’n the technology keeper are all that passes for successors, and while each uniquely skilled in their domain, they lack any of the grandmaster’s wiles or cunning.
They have been approved for up to three settlements and a population of up to 250 by the expeditionary council, to be subject to any and every level of observation we may choose to impose on them.
