907 words; about a 5 minute read

Mission: Shoreleave [3-4]
Location: D-Dock Ops
Timeline: 1630 - MD08

Alex assumed she was daydreaming when something that looked like a Reman warbird decloaked in the direct centre of the viewscreen.

“Jesus,” she started as it became obvious it was real, her natural Scottish accent overpowering the usual generic British lilt she affected for everyone else's sake, “Yellow alert.”

She knew the make. That was a Scimitar. They weren’t expecting any predator-grade stealth ships. She felt a nervousness that she managed by gripping the arms of the chair. “Report.” Alex instructed.

Lieutenant Akaar Zuul manned Tactical, while Lieutenant Rune Thul sat at Security, the two discretely eyed each other as the Reman's predator vessel dropped its cloak. Zuul triggered the yellow alert as instructed, the announcement rung out across all decks.

Rune discovered something interesting. "Commander, their shields and weapons are on standby, they seem to be at a respectful distance." He saw the vessel had a Thalaron power core, not the usual singularity core, he was glad the shields for the station were primed as per yellow alert status.

“Yeah, I think if they wanted us dead, we'd be dead." Flynn told Thul. "Flight, we want birds in the air. Friendly or unfriendly they’ll be appreciated.” Flynn told Saez.

Lieutenant Saez brought up the roster, which showed Lieutenant Palamas and the Blue Diamonds on duty. “Roman, this is flight. Prepare for immediate launch.” His voice carried to his combadge.

"Launching in 30 seconds." Came the voice of Palamas.

“Have they hailed us?” Alex asked.

“Not so far.” Frak told her from comms.

“Hail them.” Alex instructed. "And tell Ambassador Velt to get his tail down here."

A lifelike image of Envoy Abassys, the Reman representative appeared before Flynn, convincing enough that average vision would not even perceive that it was an isomorphic projection. “Commander, please forgive this intrusion.”

Alex had wanted to swear loudly when he appeared, but relief at his kindly words hit her like a welcome shuttlecraft. “Hello, then. I’m Commander Flynn. But I think you knew that already. Ambassador Velt will be with us shortly. Your intrusion, as you describe it, is unexpected.” Was he there, or not? She thought she could smell that chalky-lavender smell that Remans had. The inescapable vrei-oil stink, a distinct additive for their disruptors and armour that enhanced their personal cloaks and energy-weapon resistance.

“I am Envoy Abassys, of the Reman Imperium. I assure you your concern is unwarranted, we come in the name of peace and goodwill.” The Reman said with a polite tone and a bow.

“Alright.” She said, going for business-like. She stood up. “We can assign an embassy, but it might take a couple of days.”

“We are Reman. We need nothing we do not carry.” The Envoy deflected effortlessly.

“Well, feel free to move in right away then. We'll work around you. And your ship?” Alex asked of the slightly daunting vessel.

Shinzon’s Justice. After the great liberator.” He had a wise sincerity, and to see him speak he didn't have the uncomfortable threat-response one traditionally found in Remans. His appearance was softer, more humanoid.

“She’s kinda spooky. What are your plans out here?” Alex asked, feeling it tactically appropriate.

Ambassador Velt had entered by the time she finished asking.

“Exploration of unknown regions. Support of our allies, among the True Romulan people, the Cardassian Union, and the Breen Confederacy. Perhaps one day soon, the Federation.”

“We’d be very interested, Envoy. But the Federation does not currently recognise any Reman state. Not that we’re not open to it, but nobody ever asked.” Ambassador Velt told Abassys as he approached, reaching the spot next to Flynn.

“I understand our government is making representations in Paris as we speak. This was a timed event. Our space is declared as displayed.” Abassys tapped a display on his wrist, and a large grey sector of space illuminated on the galactic map, taking up much of the space beyond the disputed eastern Romulan neutral zone.

"Well, I'm sure you fellas shouldn't be delayed in working out those details. You're welcome to moor at Delta Dock. Otherwise we can arrange for a transporter room." Alex told the Envoy, hoping to shift him off to Velt presently.

"Indeed." The Envoy said with a hearting nodding bow. "Please let us know beaming details. I do look so forward to working with you all." Abassys said with a smile to the whole room and disappeared, the projection powered down.

"Would you like me to greet them, Commander?" Rune stood. "Along with the Ambassador?" He suggested.

"Yeah, do." Flynn agreed. Remans were warriors, a good showing would make them feel respected. "I'm gonna stay here for now. Need anything from me, sir?" She asked the Ambassador. She didn't want to be elsewhere if that Scimitar got any ideas.

"I'll have Kingsley meet us there." Velt told Thul as he turned for the door.

"Diamonds, break half your number off. Do a couple laps of the station and Dreizhen III and come back." Saez instructed, after clearing the protocol with a diplomatic representative by text. "But keep the other half where they are until the Justice makes a move." He said firmly, as the protocol officer encouraged.

The fighters had remained perfectly still in positions opposing the Scimitar. "Understood, flight." Came Palamas' voice, one could hear the difficulty he had in calling his men off with an enemy standing there, but he did it.
